The Ohio House of Representatives plans to replace the Public Library Fund (PLF) with a line-item formula that will result in reduced state funding for Ohio’s public libraries by more than $100 million over the next two years as compared to the Governor’s proposal. This less reliable funding proposal makes it harder to carry out all the great services libraries provide.
62% of the Champaign County Library budget comes from the state Public Library Fund. 33% comes from a 0.8 mill local property tax levy. We know those are all precious dollars, which is why I’m proud of our staff’s demonstrated ability to discover the most we can offer at a cost-effective, responsible use of taxpayer dollars.
We can’t do things like checking out nearly 140,000 items or offering over 500 programs in 2024 without your support. Our library is a direct reflection of Champaign County through our collection and the many programs and services we offer.
This is an unprecedented proposal to destabilize Ohio library funding and our ability to provide the best library service. We need your help.
Please contact House Member Tim Barhorst (District 85; 614-466-1507; rep85@ohiohouse.gov) and Speaker Matt Huffman (District 78; 614-466-6344; rep78@ohiohouse.gov) today to show your support for Ohio public libraries. Encourage them to restore the Public Library Fund to the amount designated in Governor DeWine’s proposed budget.
Most importantly, tell them what libraries mean to you and what you love most about the Champaign County Library.
